It is easy to imbue inanimate objects with human qualities, to perceive unique personalities in life of all kinds. Nature inspires us to questions where we fit in to a bigger picture, physically or spiritually. The mirror of our imagination reflects a broader portrait of our beings.

I start by painting on my own body, to transform myself into a new creature: a blue-ringed octopus, an owl, or a monarch butterfly. Then, alone in my studio, I set my camera on the tripod and pose. Although it’s make-believe, it doesn’t feel like I’m pretending. The emotions of this new creature well up inside me. I let my body move in unexpected ways. I am expansive, and I do not constrain myself.
In my life outside the art studio, it is harder to be playful with my appearance. As a woman, I am acutely aware of which facial expressions are acceptable. I am aware of the meanings of different hairstyles. I know what a woman’s clothes say about her. (And I can never quite make mine say something true about me. Getting dressed always feels like pretending.)
I live near the woods and treasure my morning walks there. Among the plants and animals, I am not self-conscious. I am at ease just as I am, part of an interconnected web of life that transcends any social construct. Perhaps that is why I turn to the natural world for inspiration in my work. The creatures that I become are hybrids, both human and non-human. They are beyond gender, and when I inhabit them, I am free.

The Green Man
Glazed and Fired Clay Relief Head, Dimensions height 12”, width 8”, depth 4”
The Green Man is an idea I explored with children at a summer camp where I teach. We drew many versions of the green man. He is considered to be the spirit of the forest. I wanted to try the form in clay since The Green Man was a frequent sculptural element of old English churches and buildings, often carved in wood or stone in pilasters or friezes.

My Eagle View
Colored Pencil, 17" wide x 18" high
$150
This drawing is based on a dream I had about sitting atop the Grand Canyon,
watching several eagles of different colors soaring in the air. The dream taught me
to be present in the process of creating and not rush to the "finish line".

“Walking Through the World” is a painting that shows people as they walk through sadness and difficulty. Although this painting was created before the pandemic, the faces and their struggle seem timely.

Pain Containment Pod #1: Right Knee
KIMBERLEY HARDING
2019, 16" h x 12" w x 11" d
Materials for #1: hand-dyed reed and bamboo skewers, elastic resistance bands, acrylic paint, glucosamine chondroitin, naproxen sodium, pill bottles, ginger tea wrappers, turmeric capsules, elastic bandage, hypodermic syringe.
I’ve been living with persistent pain from an assortment of causes for most of my life. I am not alone. Most of us experience pain intermittently, some of us bear with it regularly and others survive it incessantly. We all witness it. Whatever its source, whether physical, psychological or metaphysical, pain is dangerous, debilitating, draining, depressing.
Wouldn’t life be so much better if we could only grab onto pain, remove it from the place it is causing suffering and contain it safely away?
That’s what I am attempting to do with Pain Containment Pod #1: Right Knee and Pain Containment Pod #2: Left Foot

A Gourd in his Study
oil 22h x 28w
I have always been impressed by the gravitas exhibited by certain gourds. This fine specimen is shown in his study lit by a window and accompanied by his globe and books; signifying his worldliness, love of education and curiosity about the natural world.
A Family Portrait
Watercolor on paper 30w x 24h
We're sitting here in time and space,
Preserving portraits of our race,
Of mothers, fathers, red-cheeked kids,
And uncle Ervin, god forbid.
Selfie 2015
acrylic based with other media on cradled canvas 24" x 20".
$450 (10% off sale to No Kid Hungry Charity)
It depicts how I knew myself then.
I saw myself having a multi-layered personality, I saw possibilities where others may tend to see roadblocks, I always smiled, I still do. Yet I could "bite" when I needed to, especially when I witnessed injustices. That smile sometimes masked a deep sadness at what I was unable to "fix" regarding a very special relationship in my life. Then and now, I am patient, I trust the process and believe in perfect timing for the perfect shifts to occur.

Selfie with Orbs 2020
Acrylic based with enamels and glass powder on cradled canvas, 20" x 24".
$450 (10% off sale to No Kid Hungry Charity)
This painting depicts an understanding of myself having matured spiritually and undergone dramatic physical changes. I have lost 60 lbs since January, when I had a heart attack. I have never been more comfortable with who I am in all my roles, in the kind of work I am doing in the world and I am keenly aware of the light that I, like everyone else, shines from deep inside the heart. I am aligned with Spirit and I am very curious about what life brings at every turn. I see my own gifts, enjoy discovering the gifts of others and continue to trust that I am in the right place and at the right time, while life unfolds naturally with equal perfection.
A poem arose during my meditation with the painting:
I am an ancient one
my heart is older than the mountains
And I accept its incomparable wisdom.
My lineage is sacred,
and I come through
at this moment in history
to teach
to love
to mirror peace
to enable healing for humankind
to spread Grace upon the land
to allow the deepest truths to emerge.
I turn my eyes to the myriad of blessings
shining through in the here and now,
while orbs of light appear
inside and around me
to protect and illuminate.

Coronavirus Warrior
collage made from paper and acrylic paint (16" x 12")
kNOw ME Cme Bme
Mixed media--old oak mirror, alphabet blocks, wood knitting needle, adhesive black flock
26 h x 19 w x 2
A Victorian mirror turned upside down, so the carving becomes her hair; black flock eyes stare at the viewer, whose face may also be reflected; children's blocks spell out the ambiguous title
Look into My Eye
Mixed media--wood casting patterns, glass, old glass button, antique frame, duck tape
dimensions 21 h x 19 w x 2
Ah, but which eye? The swirly glass one that draws you in, or the empty one (a wood casting pattern) into which you could also fall?
Sea King
Mixed media – wood, shells, metal (old wood casting pattern, seashells, metal wire and window shade brackets)
22.5 h x 18.5 w x 5
The wooden casting pattern made me think of a face that just needed eyes. I thought of a crown of shells for a Sea King, so then gave him the swirly seashell eyes.

Faces are more than just the person who wears them. Some symbolize hope and history, others stand for the thousands of unseen forsaken souls living with injustice. In recognizing these individuals, we can take note of, or “recognize” the call for understanding and change.
