Correspondences: Iceland <-> Boston
Photographs by
Bert Halstead and Magnus Snorrason
In the fall of 2021, Belmont resident Bert Halstead made a photography visit to Iceland—fulfilling a long-held dream.
Icelander Magnus Snorrason, who now makes his home in Belmont, posts a photo a day online—capturing Boston area urban and natural scenes.
As conceived by the BGA and curated by photographers Halstead and Snorrason, the exhibit encourages viewers to identify and contemplate the “correspondences” between the two photographers' visions.

Bert has been a photography enthusiast ever since his grade-school days, when his aunt came to Mexico, where Bert was then living, and took him to visit the ancient Maya cities on the Yucatan peninsula. A highlight of the trip for Bert was when his aunt let him use her Pentax single-lens reflex camera. Later, after returning to the New York area, Bert would visit his aunt for a few weeks every summer, learning more about photography. Like many of his generation, he was captivated by the magic of watching a print in the developer tray come to life before his eyes.
Bert came to the Boston area for college and has now become a confirmed New Englander, but he still enjoys traveling to far corners of the world with his wife Louise and always takes his camera with him. Together, they have managed to visit six continents so far. They have also mounted a couple of joint photo exhibits in Belmont: one in the since-closed Kitchen on Common restaurant, and one in the Belmont Media Center. Bert also has had several of his photographs juried into exhibits at the Belmont Gallery of Art as well as the Darkroom Gallery in Burlington, Vermont. He is a member of the Boston Camera Club.
As a trained computer scientist, Bert found it pretty natural to switch from the "wet" darkroom to the digital darkroom, but as he uses technology to enhance the impact of photographs, he always tries to beware of going too far and making them look unnatural. As for artistic preferences, Bert finds himself especially drawn to images that make a strong graphical statement. Whether traveling or working in the studio, he loves to find interesting patterns, shapes, textures, and repetitions.
Magnus started photography at an early age, growing up in Iceland. At 13, one of his photos won him a year’s supply of Ilford black and white photo paper and chemicals. While this set his eye for black and white work, over the years he has experimented with many photography techniques (film and digital) and genres.
Magnus’s prints have been displayed in juried exhibitions at galleries across the country, and published in various photography magazines. His images have appeared locally at events at the Griffin Museum, the Photographic Resource Center, BLINK, and First Night.
Ultimately, he keeps returning to the challenge of capturing “a sense of place” for his environment. Having now lived most of his life in the Boston area, the result is an extensive portfolio of images from his commutes and rambles through the area’s multifaceted streets, parks, and cityscapes. He is delighted to have this opportunity to present work from the last five years of this portfolio.
