Conveying emotion is a core purposes of art--from somber to silly, deep sorrow to bight joy, these pieces capture the feelings expressed on our faces. No words necessary. The artists use lighting, perspective, composition and color to convey emotion.

Grapes of Wrath
As an artist, I am most in my element when portraying light
and transparency using oils. I love creating scenes where light is diffusing through objects and taking on the color of those objects, and throwing them on to a human subject. Everything we see is a reflection of light, and I strive to create pieces that show the versatility of light and its dynamic with shadow, making even the most mundane objects transform into something beautiful.

Paul is an oil painting which I made in honor of ballroom dancer and teacher of dance Paul Holmes, who passed away in 2019. He gazes downward as the lights of the ballroom strike his forehead.

my subject was a very special young friend, the daughter of my neighbor. I'd seen her grow from young girl to a young woman, watched her wonder and witnessed her maturity. She sat for me a couple hours as I began her portrait, then I completed it with the aid of my photograph. Drawing her portrait was a wonderful way to be with her--to honor her and record this moment of her life.

Enlightenment
Oil, 36” by 48”
Capturing the moment before a large transition in my life, this self portrait captures feelings of anticipation with enlarged eyes. The shafts of sun are representative of how knowledge and experience are often physicalized with light metaphors; for example enlightenment, to shed light on, a light bulb going off in someone head.

Boxed In
8x8”
$300
A pandemic self-portrait: lying on the carpet in our small upstairs office watching clouds through the skylight, trying to block the relentless noise of my husband’s endless virtual meetings and constant phone calls, feeling confined, wishing for some peace, quiet, and a little time to myself. I painted a square composition to emphasize the boxed-in, trapped feelings I was experiencing.

I accept commissions especially for portraits.
It is easy to imbue human personality into inanimate objects. Nature inspires us to see how we fit in to the bigger picture, physically or spiritually. The mirror of our imagination reflects a broader portrait of our beings.
