What is family? Traditionally defined as people we’re related to by birth or adoption, family can also be represented by those we surround ourselves with: those who accept us for who we are, provide comfort to us and love us unconditionally. This includes our friends and relatives, our animal companions and our community.
Self-Portrait with Henry
Study in Brown,
2019, oil on canvas, 24" x 30”
NFS
In “Self-Portrait with Henry, Study in Brown,”I portray myself as an artist holding brushes and a
postcard of James MacNeil Whistler’s painting of his Mother. Like the Whistler’s Study in Black,
I create a study in Brown. Study in brown is a play on my name. I am wearing brown clothing
in a brown room with brown furniture. This painting has a harmonious content feeling. The
color theme provides the artist with the challenge to mix many color browns.

Hans and Maxi
Watercolor 8" x 10”
NFS
I created this painting as a birthday gift for my husband, Hans. Our Siamese cat Maxi absolutely adores Hans. When Hans returns home, Maxi greets him enthusiastically at the door and meows loudly and incessantly until Hans picks him up and puts him on his shoulder, at which point the meowing stops and very loud purring commences. Maxi takes every opportunity to nap on Hans’s lap, a moment I captured when we were on vacation this past summer.

Self-Portrait with Gracie
Pastel/Charcoal on Paper, 22" x 30"
NFS – Personal Collection
ARTIST'S NOTE: This drawing took about 20 hours straight through. I managed to get pretty good likenesses and a sense of space in the room. This was my first use of pastels to brighten up a monotone drawing.
What isn't obvious in Art is that self-portraits always include an invisible presence: The Mirror! Distorting perspective – but adding the unexpected. So my cat is not really that large, although she WAS big in spirit. A funny, lovely and loving tortoiseshell cat. You can see that she's slightly annoyed that this picture is taking so long. Sadly, she's no longer with me, my friend of nearly 18 years. I'm very glad she was with me that day.
Mothers' Day
2019, oil on canvas, 36" x 48"
NFS
In “Mothers’ Day,” all the symbols on the porch relate to a time of waiting. The Mother falls
asleep while she waits by the phone to hear from all of her children. Family pictures, flowers
and comfortable porch furniture fill the room. Outside it is getting late in the day. A bird flies
free outside while the pet finch is forever in its cage. The dog patiently waits for something to
happen.

Portrait of a Young Boy
watercolor on paper, 12"x16"
NFS private collection
Real life youth painting is very particular as artist and model face a foreigner during a long time. Through this mutual contemplation, a new, strong, lonesome personality becomes powerfully present. The relationship between the painter and the model is unique, whatever the age of the person. Some children don’t like to be stared at, which is normal, and requires patience and kindness. Fleur Thesmar says “I am happy when they can’t hide a strong playfulness expressing in their body and their face".

Portrait of a Young Man
Egg Tempera on Panel, 12"x12"
NFS private collection
Inspired by renaissance portraiture, Fleur Thesmar painted a teenager overlooking the sky and the ocean. Between youth and maturity, young people begin to face the vastness of the world and their own fate. They are still very close to us but already looking away. The richness of the blues is allowed by modern pigments that were unknown in the middle ages, but the tempera technique is one of the oldest of the world.

Early on in the pandemic, we made sure that everyone got outside for a walk once a day. My daughter is always holding my hand and this image is from my vantage point.

Mother of the Groom
acrylic on unstretched canvas, 12" x 16"

My sister sent a photo of herself in front of the doors for Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. While that inspired the background, I didn't have the right image of her until she relaxed at the end of her son's wedding celebration.

These three portraits were painted on a roll of paper 48”wide one by one and represent different stages of life. I could see only one painting at a time when I was working and only reveled to me when I unrolled the paper outside. The video that helps further understand these 2 portraits is called Temporary Structure is available on Instagram and my website.
Portrait of My Father
acrylic, 28"x22"
NFS
My father died quite a while ago, but the portrait brought back dear memories of him and my mother. I recently published a picture book about his life that I wrote and illustrated, The Boy Without A Name. My father was one of the contract children or indentured child laborers ("Verdingkinder") in Switzerland. You can read more about it on my website

I am not interested in private commissions of portraits, but if you fall in love with any of my (non portrait) work on my website, please contact me.

Pregnant Selfie
ceramic shard mosaic 28"H x 20"W
Balibby@gmail.com
Www.Betteannlibby.com
Pregnant selfie was taken only 2 weeks before the birth of her first child, from the reflection in the subway window. Her belly refers to the sonogram taken of the baby in utero. She is confident, relaxed, independent and alone. Juggling the cell phone grasping the pole while on the moving train is no problem for her and bodes well for her next adventure!
I enjoy combining disparate elements into new forms of harmony. Many of these narrative sculptures & mosaics embody her own mythology, which explores well-being, womanhood, and passages, using irony, humor, and metaphor to create the unexpected.
Our vocations and avocations give purpose and meaning to our lives. What we must do or choose to do is an important way we define ourselves—and how we are seen by others.
